Do you have collision enabled for both objects in the properties?
Also how are you linking the objects together? Are you putting one in the other, or are you putting them both under another object or group?

If they have physics, put them both in a group, enable sub model collision. If the models disappear in the editor, just run the project and stop running and they'll re-appear in editor.
If they're just static, putting them in merge should be fine.
